Question: Why were the Europeans interested in establishing trading posts in India?

Answer: Europeans were interested in establishing trading posts in India because of Indian goods such as spices, cotton and silk fabrics, indigo, opium, gold and silver jewellery were in great demand.

Question: What means were employed by the British to acquire control over India?

Answer: The European countries like power British, French, Dutch fought amongst themselves to acquire control over India’s profitable trad and commerce leading to several wars. In this struggle Britain emerged victorious and acquired complete control over India’s trade.

Question: Define the Subsidiary and the Doctrine of Lapse.

Answer: Subsidiary Alliance: The Subsidiary Alliance, Introduced by Lord Wellesley, stated that Indian rulers would have to maintain a permanent British army in their kingdom and pay its maintenance.

Doctrine of Lapse: Lord Dalhousie introduced the Doctrine of Lapse according to Which the British Could take over control of any Indian state if the king did not have a natural-born heir.
