Converting Per Cents to Fractions

60% of Class V says that maths is their favorite subject. What of the class has maths as their favorite subject?

60% is the same as saying 60 out of 100.

Step 1. Write the percentage as a fraction with denominator 100: 60/100

Step 2. Reduce the fraction to the lowest term: 60/100 = 30/50 = 15/25 = 3/5

Answer: 3/5 of Class V says that maths is their favorite subject.

DECIMALS AND PER CENTS

A. Converting Decimals to Per Cents

(a) Sheela saves 0.64 of her pocket money every month. What per cent of her pocket money does she save?

0.64 = ?%

Step 1. Write decimal as a fraction → 64/100

Step 2. Multiply by 100 → 64/100 × 100 = 64

Step 3. Write the % sign  64%

Answer: Sheela saves 64 % of her pocket money every month.

(b) 0.03 = ?%

3/100 × 100 = 3%

(c) 2.4 = ?%

24/10 × 100 = 240%

(d) 0.7 = ?%

7/10 × 100 = 70%

B. Converting Per Cents to Decimals

(a) 12% of the children in Anita’s class wear spectacles. How would you show that as a decimal?

Step 1. Write the per cent as a fraction → 12/100

Step 2. Rewrite the fraction as decimal → 0.12

12% = 0.12

Answer: 0.12 children in Aneeta’s class were spectacles.

(b) 8% = 8/100 = 0.08

(c) 138% = 138/100 = 1.38

CHECKPOINT

  1. To change a decimal to a percent mentally, move the decimal point two places to the right followed by the % sign.
  2. To change a per cent to a decimal mentally, move the decimal point two places to the left and remove the % sign.
