9th CBSE English Examination: Mid Term Question Paper (2019-20)

General Instructions:

1. The question paper is divided into three sections:
   Section A: Reading  –  20 Marks
   Section B: Writing & Grammar  –  30 Marks
   Section C: Literature  –  30 Marks

2. All questions are compulsory.

3. You may attempt any section at a time.

4. All questions of that particular section must be attempted in the correct order.

Section A [20 Marks]

1. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: [8 Marks]

1. Recycling means treating that have already been used, so that they can be used again. Making new things from recycled ones takes less money, less energy and less of the earth’s resources. Since less energy is used in recycling, factories don’t release as many pollutants either. Recycling begins with people separating recyclable materials for other trash. The / separated recyclable materials are collected, processed and then sold to manufacturers for use in new products.
2. Aluminum and steel cans, cardboard, glass, newspapers and plastic bottles are all recyclable materials. These items can be made into new things such as cans that hold food and drinks, cardboard boxes, glass jars and bottles, newspaper and office papers, plastic bottles and playground equipment. Kitchen waste such as leftover foodstuff and vegetables peels can be separated rather than put in the trash.
3. This waste can be added to soil to form compost. Compost helps the plants to grow better. Compositing is a cheap and useful process of speeding up the decay of waste. Garden waste, such as grass clippings, dried leaves and so on can be similarly converted into compost. Some types of trash are dangerous and need to be disposed of in special ways. Old paints, pesticides, cleaning chemicals, fluorescent lamps, mercury thermometers, and electronic equipment can contaminate our land, water and air.

2. Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow: [12 Marks]

Space and the Cherry Tree

1. A four-year old sapling of a cherry stone that spent time aboard the International Space Station (IIS), burst into bloom a full six years ahead of Mother Nature’s normal schedule. Its early blooming has baffled Buddhist brothers of the ancient temple in central Japan where the tree is growing.
2. The wonder pip was among 265 harvested from the celebrated Chujo-hime-seigan-zakura tree, selected as part of a project to gather seeds from different kinds of cherry trees, at 14 locations across Japan. The stone sent to ISS in November 2008, came back to each in July the following year, after circling the globe, 4100 times. While some were sent for lab tests, most were ferried back their places of origin and a selection were planted in nurseries near the Ganjoli Temple.
3. The Ganjoli temple sapling is not the only earth-flowering saplling. Of the 14 locations in which they were planted, blossoms have been spotted in 4 places. Two years ago, a young tree bore 11 flowes in Hokuto, a mountain region 115 km west of Tokyo. The seeds had been sent to the ISS as part of an educational and cultural project to let children gather stones and learn how they grow into trees and live on, after returning from space. The project organizer had expected the Gangoji (tree) to blossom in ten years after planting, when the children would come of age.
4. Kaori Tomito-Yokotani, a researcher at the university of Tsukuba who took part in the project, said they coud still not rule out the possibility that it was somewhat influences by its exposure to the space environment. She said it was difficult to explain why the temple tree had grown so fast because there was no control group to compare its growth with that of other trees. She said cross-pollination with another species could no be ruled out. But the lack of data hampering an explanation.
5. There is also a possibility that exposure to stronger cosmic ray accelerated the process of sprouting and overall growth. At present scientists would like to acknowledge that they still don’t know.
