Dussehra Essay For Students & Children

The Dussehra is a famous festival of the Hindus. It is celebrated in the memory of Rama’s victory over Ravana, the demon King of Lanka. The festival lasts for ten days.

Rama Lila showing the different scenes from the life of Rama is staged at night. People go to see it and learn many important lessons. They come to know how good triumphs over evil in the long run.

During the festival days there is a great hustle and bustle in the bazaars. ‘Palkis‘ representing different aspects of Rama’s life are taken out every day.

On the last day, the festival is held in an open ground, outside the city. People, old and young, in gaudy dresses, go there to witness the show and participate in the celebrations. Big paper effigies of Ravana and his relatives are set up. These are stuffed with fireworks and crackers.

In the afternoon a procession is taken out through the main bazaars of the city. The ‘Palkis‘ are beautifully decorated. On the way Rama, Lakshmana and Sita are garlanded and worshiped by the people. Rama goes round the effigies are set on fire. There is a great noise and confusion all over the place. After the effigies are burnt down, the people return to their houses happily and the festival comes to an end.

The festival of Dussehra is also known as Vijayadashmi and celebrated with great joy and enthusiasm by the Hindu people all over the India. It is one of the most important religious festivals of the India. According to the historical beliefs and most famous Hindu scripture, the Ramayana, it has been mentioned that Lord Rama had performed a chandi-puja (holy prayer in order to get blessings of the Goddess Durga Mata to kill the powerful demon, Ravana. Ravana was ten-headed demon king of the Sri Lanka who had kidnapped the wife of Lord Rama, Seeta to take revenge of his sister, Suparnakha. From then, the day Lord Rama killed Ravana was started celebrating as the Dussehra festival.
